Awards and Recognitions

Annual celebration of MHU community members.

Lions' Choice Awards
7 p.m., Moore Auditorium
The Lions' Choice Awards are the annual awards ceremony that recognize the academic and athletic accomplishments of Mars Hill University student-athletes. Awards range from Male and Female Highest GPA, as well as Highest Team GPA, to Man and Female of the Year. The LCA's recognize stellar athletic performances with the Performance of the Year Award as well as Male and Female Athlete of the Year. Celebrating community engagement and support from the Mars Hill University faculty/staff are also key honors recognized at the event.


Late Night Breakfast
8-10 p.m., Pittman Dining Hall
Faculty and staff members serve breakfast foods for students during this annual tradition on the evening before final exams begin.

Wednesday, April 30

Puppy (and Kitten) Day
12-3 p.m., Bentley Fellowship Hall
Puppy Day is a Mars Hill tradition that gives students an opportunity to destress during exam week and also benefits local animal rescue organizations. Students are encouraged to bring pet food, toys, or treats for a pet supplies drive for Heart of the Foothills Animal Rescue, which is bringing this year's puppies and kittens.

Natural Sciences Lab Coat Ceremony
5 p.m., Community Life Pavilion (behind Broyhill Chapel)
A ceremony for the awarding of lab coats to graduating seniors in the natural sciences.

Mars Hill First Friday
5-8 p.m., Downtown Mars Hill
Live music, local vendors, delicious food, and community fun in the heart of downtown Mars Hill. MHU's Bailey Mountain Cloggers will perform at 6:30 p.m.

Golden Lion Awards
7:30 p.m., Owen Theatre
Performances and awards for theatre arts.

Thursday, May 8

Nursing Pinning Ceremony
2 p.m., Broyhill Chapel
Graduating nurses will receive a pin which signifies their transition from the student role to the medical practice role. The tradition is said to have originated in the 1860s with Florence Nightingale, who presented medals of excellence to the graduating nurses of the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in London, England.

Health Sciences White Coat Ceremony
10 a.m., Ferguson Health Sciences Center, Rm. 306
White Coat Ceremony for graduating seniors in Allied and Integrative Health Sciences.

Heritage Student Cording Ceremony
7 p.m., Sunken Garden (between Marshbanks Hall & Spilman Hall on the Upper Quad)
Recognition of graduates with immediate family members who also attended Mars Hill University. Parents and Mars Hill alumni in the family will present the graduating senior with a heritage cord to wear at commencement.

Spring Commencement
9:30 a.m., Moore Auditorium
Graduation ceremony for students completing their degree requirements in spring 2025. Members of the class of 1975 (50-year reunion class) will lead the procession of graduates into the auditorium.

Friends of Bailey Mountain Spring Meeting

This community group convenes to support stewardship of Bailey Mountain including preservation, management and access. We meet quarterly and are open to all. The Chair reports any recommendations and concerns to the Town Manager of Mars Hill.
