Reception for Ghosts from Helene Artists This Friday at MHU's Weizenblatt Gallery

More than 70 artists exhibiting work from the hurricane

Mars Hill, NC (01/21/2025) — Mars Hill University's Weizenblatt Gallery will hold a reception on Friday, January 24, for the "Ghosts from Helene" group exhibition of artworks recovered from, or about, Hurricane Helene. The reception will run from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery, located in the Moore Fine Arts Building on Cascade Street on the university campus.

Hundreds of Western North Carolina artists were impacted by the severity of Hurricane Helene. Studios were destroyed, artwork was washed down the river, galleries were unable to operate, and lives were upended. Many beautiful artworks were damaged and are no longer considered to be gallery-worthy.

"Ghosts from Helene" is an exhibition about loss, recovery, and resilience in the area's art communities. More than 70 artists are showing work that comes from the storm. Some of it was damaged, some lost but recovered, and some is new art about the impact of the storm. There are paintings, collages, photography, sculptures, ceramics, constructions, and many other media. Many still show their scars. They are, like all of us, forever changed by the storm.

Some of the artworks will be for sale. All sales will be between the artist and buyer, and all proceeds go directly to the artists.

"Ghosts from Helene" runs through Thursday, February 6. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is always free.
