The National Trust for Public Land, Madison County Conservancy, and Friends of Bailey Mountain are working to conserve a 137-acre land tract on Bailey Mountain ridge furthering ongoing local efforts to protect the natural resources and watersheds of Ivy Creek and French Broad River, and provide accessible nature-based outdoor recreation opportunities. The property is intended to be managed as part of the adjacent Bailey Mountain Preserve, creating a destination for outdoors, ecology, and Madison County heritage enthusiasts. Visual and Performing Arts Visitation Day
9 a.m.-6 p.m., Broyhill Chapel
Visual and Performing Arts Visit Days are specifically geared to prospective students, giving them an opportunity to see firsthand what it would be like to study and perform or create at Mars Hill. Designed for students whose interest is in a major or minor in music; singing or playing in an ensemble; performing in theatre, musical theatre, or dance; or creating in art, ceramics/sculpture, graphic design, or photography. To enable students to learn more about being a musician, an artist, a performer or a behind-the-scenes technician at Mars Hill University, the visit day will include opportunities to meet with admissions and financial aid representatives, attend select classes, sit in on rehearsals, receive a private lesson, and take a campus tour.
Black History Month Bailey Mountain Hike
3 p.m., Bailey Mountain Park & Preserve (889 Forest Street)
Hike will include a reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I've Been To the Mountaintop" speech.
Unveiling Our Treasures
3:30 p.m., Ferguson Health Sciences Center 306
2024 Hart-Melvin Archival Research Fellows Leila Weinstein and Jennifer Miranda-Pineda (Nursing/Appalachian Studies) will present their findings from a semester of research in the Ramsey Center's Southern Appalachian Archives. MHU's Southern Appalachian Archives is filled with treasures that illuminate the history of western North Carolina, but are also relevant to the history of wider Southern Appalachia. This year's Hart-Melvin Archival Research Fellows used secondary sources to create a partial timeline of Madison County history during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and then connected key points in that history to primary sources housed in the archives. This project provides glimpses into moonshining, tourism, and the craft revival (to name a few)-all as they played out in Madison County.
Alpha Chi Induction Ceremony
7 p.m., Oscar Sams Dining Room (Pittman Dining Hall)
Induction ceremony for new members of Alpha Chi National Honor Society. Members of the honor society must be juniors or seniors with grade point averages in the top 10 percent of the student body. Mars Hill's chapter, North Carolina Epsilon Chapter 120, was formed in 1971.
