Rural Heritage Museum Exhibit Focuses on Southern Appalachian Life
A Cabinet of Curiosities Will Be On Display Through December 30
Mars Hill, NC (07/06/2018) — The current exhibition at the Rural Heritage Museum at Mars Hill University is "A Cabinet of Curiosities: Selections From the Permanent Collection." The exhibit, which will be displayed through December 30, 2018, features late 19th century objects once used by Appalachian homesteaders in Western North Carolina. Objects on display include spinning wheels, looms, farm tools, hand-wrought objects for household use, silver, a pump organ, and other unique objects of cultural heritage donated or purchased by the museum over the past 40 years.
The exhibit also includes informational panels, including some that address the history and function of museums in society, and a short video that examines the role of museums as an indispensable resource in contemporary education.
The Rural Heritage Museum is open daily (except Mondays) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment. It is located in Montague Hall on the Mars Hill University campus. Admission is free. More information is available at (828) 689-1400 or www.mhu.edu/museum.
